I am pleased to let you know that the Manners in Minutes seminars in Virginia will be September 29th and September 30th.  The seminars will be at Hollybriar Farm in Lanexa Virginia, near Willamsburg.  Our host will be Pat Rock who breeds Lakeland Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers.

Meet Dash Training with Distractions

Jumat, 29 April 2016

Hi! I am Dash and I am learning a lot.

Good Day Leapers,
This evening we had the pleasure of working with a cute little fellow named Dash. Leap has been meeting with Dash for a few weeks now, but today we tested his recall/come when called with high distractions... At the dog park.
How do we do that?
Well, we make it into a game. You see, sometimes, we humans only call our dogs while at the dog park when WE are ready to leave. Of course, the dogs are never ready to leave because theyre having way, way too much fun. The trick is to be creative.
Here are some ideas:
1. Run away from the dog. Thats right! If you become the most fun interesting item at the dog park then then your dog is sure to follow you, run after you, and come to you. Do this very often while your dog is at play to try to get their focus back on you.
2. Reward/Praise your dog. Remember to reinforce your dog whenever he/she comes near you, stops by, or even looks at you. This will ensure that the dog is paying attention to you. Yes, we didnt ask them for anything, but dont we want them to do this all the time? You know, come to us? So, this is a good way to shape it. Reward behaviors you want, even if not asked.
3. Practice. Always practice at home or outside of the park first with a leash before adding all these distractions.
Anyway, these are just some quick, easy tips. Im sure you guys have some really good ones: how do you guys get your dogs to come to you while at the dog park?

XOXO LEAP!

Note: every dog is different and not every dog likes dog parks. Please make sure you know your dog very well before taking them to an off leash dog park area. Dog parks can be fun for some, but very stressful place for others.

house dog training

Senin, 18 April 2016

To teach your dog tricks even easy ones you need to have some small reward treats, be in a quiet suitable place and keep the training sessions to 10 - 15 minutes or your dog will start to get board, remember when he gets something right lots of praise and a reward treat, just be careful not to get him over excited or he will loose concentration. Getting your dog to give you his paw, first get your dog to sit, then as you say the word paw take your dogs paw in your hand, give the dog a treat, repeat this, after a few times do not take his paw so quickly, say the word, count to one then take it, you should notice he is bringing his paw up as you say the word if he does not go back to saying it at the same time, do it a few more times then slow your response again. After 2 or 3 sessions most dogs pick this one up quite happily.

The high five, like a lot of tricks the high five is a progression of an earlier trick, in this cast the paw trick. Hold a treat in your fingers and raise your hand slightly higher than you would for the paw trick. You dog will think you want to do the paw trick and will reach for the treat with his paw as we taught him earlier, as he reaches up you say “high five” and give him the treat. Once your dog has mastered the paw trick this one should be very easy to learn and with just a few sessions he will be doing it on hand signal rather than voice control.

Getting your dog to jump through a hoop, before you start this one I would just like to ask you to be a little sensible and not hold the hoop too high as you do not want your dog to heart himself while doing the trick. Sit your dog on one side of a hoola hoop, get the dogs attention on your hand on the other side of the hoop take a treat in your hand and give the dog the command to release him from the sit, at first he may attempt to go around or under the hoop, if this happens start again, your dog wants the treat and will soon learn that going around or under does not get it so he will soon start going through it, when he does say hoopla and give him the treat. He will soon be jumping through the hoop on the command of hoopla. When I started doing this trick I had a medium sized dog (a Labrador) so I started with the hoop 6 inches from the ground and slowly raised it to waist height, if you have a smaller dog you might want to start with the hoop touching the ground so the dog just goes through the hoop and then slowly raise it as he gets used to the trick.

Willaimsburg VA MIM seminar

Selasa, 12 April 2016

For the last couple of years our friend, Pat Rock of Hollybriar Kennels in Lanexa Va has wanted me to come out and do a dog training seminar on the Manners in Minutes system.  This year we are going to be able to do it.

I will be at Hollybriar (near Williamsburg VA) on September 29th and September 30th2012.  Both mornings I will be training a new dog in the Manners in Minutes system to show people how easy and quickly it works.  The afternoon seminar on the 29thwill be on how to use Manners in Minutes to work with aggressive and submissive dogs.  The afternoon seminar on the 30thwill be raising puppies in Manners in Minutes and how to prepare show dogs for the ring using the system.

As I have written in this blog before, at this time there are only two training centers using this system, Pat Muller’s Quansa Kennels in South Beloit, IL and here at Pikes Peak Manners In Minutes in Colorado Springs.  Since so many people find this blog looking for Manners in Minutes training, this will give some of you a chance to find out about this system if you can’t come to Illinois or Colorado.

Pat Muller does have both a book and a DVD on how to train in this method.  So you can train without working with either of us.  But sometimes it helps to not only see it in person, but to be able to ask questions.  This will be that opportunity.

If you have stumbled onto this blog looking for help, and you live near Williamsburg, then this may be what you need.

In addition to a supply of the q-bone and q-calmer training devices I will have a brand new workbook that will explain in great detail how to train your dog yourself if you are able to attend this seminar.

As soon as a few more details are worked out I will post here, and on the Pikes Peak Manners In Minutes Facebook page, how to sign up for this class.

I hope you can come.  And since Pat is a Lakeland breeder you will get to see the breed I so often write about.

Doug
